One Perth school, Koondoola Primary School, has introduced The Song Room to support the educational achievements of Aboriginal and CaLD (Culturally and Linguistically Diverse) children in the metropolitan area through the arts.

Being the most multicultural primary school in Western Australia, this program is particularly important. In The Song Room’s weekly Deadly Arts workshop students can learn, engage and participate in Aboriginal culture and heritage as well as the cultures and heritage of students from other Indigenous backgrounds or those students who have a LBOTE (language backgrounds other than English).

By playing Lotterywest games, you’ve helped bring The Song Room to life with a $311,894 grant. The funds will support a two-year pilot program in primary schools in the Perth metropolitan area with high Aboriginal and CaLD communities.

Koondoola Primary School year six student, Angel, loves the weekly classes.

“It’s been an amazing experience because I’ve never actually had the chance to learn my culture until now,” she said.

“It doesn’t matter where we come from; we share music and dance from everywhere.”

Research has shown that students involved in The Song Room programs have shown increases in school attendance, academic achievements, and critical and creative thinking.

Domain, a fellow Koondoola Primary School student, says the program has helped him feel proud of where he comes from.

“It makes me proud of my culture, and proud of my colours,” he said.
